Important Alton Miles for Meso Info & Early Packet Pickup

Posted on Thu Sep 22, 2011 6:34am

Dear Runners and Walkers,

Thank you for registering for the 3rd Annual Alton Miles for Meso 5K Race & 2K Family Fun Run. This year looks to be our best year yet with more than 500 participants already registered. We're excited to welcome an elite field of international runners and to host the Road Runners Club of America Illinois 5K Championship in addition to our traditional race day festivities.

Goodies & Early Packet Pickup

Included in your registration packet will be a blue, long-sleeved Miles for Meso T-shirt, your race number, and a race packet filled with sponsor goodies including a week pass to Nautilus, Meso Awareness bracelets, and other giveaways. On race day, check-in and packet pickup lasts from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at the Registration Tent located in the parking lot directly across from Marquette High School on the corner of Fourth & Court streets. Early pickup is also available for both runners & walkers before the race on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the reception desk at the Simmons Law Firm building, 1 Court Street.

Parking instructions

Parking on race day is available in several lots located north of the Simmons Firm building at the corner of Easton & Court streets, along Alby Street between E. 3rd and E. 5th streets and at Alton City Hall, 101 E. 3rd Street. Additional angled public parking is available along Market & E. 4th streets. For a good map check out the link below.

Run with the Pro Fund Raiser

This year, professional runner & Edwardsville, Ill., native Stephen Pifer will attend the race as the celebrity starter. Pifer, who is professionally sponsored by Nike and runs with the famous Oregon Track Club, won't be competing. Instead, he will be raising funds for our charity, the Meso Foundation. All race participants will have a chance to win a special "Run with a NIKE Pro" prize package. A silent auction will be set up in the registration tent prior to the race where runners can place a bid up until 8:30 on Saturday morning. He has agreed to run the auction winner's pace and not the speed that got 4th place (13:50) at the USA 5K National Championship in Rhode Island last weekend.

Course Safety

Alton's brick streets, rolling hills and scenic Mississippi River view make the Miles for Meso course popular with both runners and walkers. (Take a Video Tour of the Course!)  Because the first and last mile of both the 5K Run course and the 2K Walk course overlap, 2-way runner lanes will be set up. Course Marshalls and signs will be placed along the course to help direct traffic, but please still take extra precaution along the 2-way runner traffic areas. The Alton Police Department will be regulating traffic and closing some streets along the course. As another safety precaution, please leave your pets & headphones at home. They are NOT allowed. In addition, please limit stroller use on the course. If you plan to walk with a stroller, please be courteous by using the sidewalks.

Why we are doing this

Thank you, once again, for your participation in the Alton Miles for Meso race. Your support will help fund cancer research for mesothelioma, a rare and preventable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Last year, we raised $25,000 for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, and, with your help, we?re hoping to once again make a difference in the fight against mesothelioma.

If you have any additional questions or concerns before Saturday, check out or send an
or call our toll free number 1-877-304-MESO (6376).

See you on race day!

Mike Wever
Race Director
