Bruce A. Waite Miles for Meso 5k Run/Walk

Posted on Tue Oct 28, 2014 7:10am

The 3rd Annual Bruce A. Waite Miles for Meso 5k Run/Walk has raised over $10,000 for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. The race, which was attended by nearly 300 people, took place Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014 in Ontario, Ohio, at the high school.

The event honors Bruce A. Waite, a teacher at Mansfield Senior from 1959 - 1989, and avid runner for over 30 years. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2002 and died in 2003. Mesothelioma is a cancer caused from asbestos exposure.

The Waite Family started the race three years ago as a way to honor Bruce’s life and legacy by fundraising for mesothelioma research to find a cure for this fatal disease.

Jill Waite, Race Director and daughter of Bruce, said the race has become a way for her to share the day with all mesothelioma warriors and their families.

“The race may have my Dad's name, but it is about every single person we have lost or are fighting alongside - if we can help others heal, then Dad's legacy continues, and we have done something worthwhile with our lives,” she said. “And the ripple effect continues.”

This event continues to grow every year.

A new feature to this year’s race was chip timing provided by Ohio Race Day. Each runner/walker has a computerized chip attached to their shoe.  As the race begins, each chip is activated, and as the runner crosses the finish line, the chip registers their individual time.

“That way, everyone could know their exact time, immediately after the race,” said Jill Waite. “The dedicated runners want that, and the others like knowing their specific time, too.”

Other fundraising activities included door prizes, live auctions and a 50/50 raffle.

The 4th annual Bruce A. Wait Miles for Meso race will return next year on Sunday, September 20, 2015.
