Miles for Meso Race & Walk Fundraising Information
"Words cannot express what this event means to our family. Personally, the most important part of organizing this event is the feeling of community we strive to provide other families that have been affected by mesothelioma. I hope that everyone that attends our event feels the positive encouragement and camaraderie." -Sarah Pavlick
The John Pavlick Miles for Meso 8k & Family Fun Run
Presented by Simmons Hanly Conroy, the first John Pavlick Miles for Meso 8K & Family Fun Run took place on Mesothelioma Awareness Day, Sept. 26, 2010, around beautiful Burke Lake Park. The Pavlick family hosted their Miles for Meso run and fun walk in honor of their husband & father, John Pavlick. Through their work, they raised more than $13,000 to help other families and individuals impacted by a mesothelioma diagnosis that first year. Since then, the race has raised over $75,000 for mesothelioma research.
The 4th John Pavlick Miles for Meso 8K race will took place Sept. 14, 2014, raising over $15,000 and once again benefitted the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mesothelioma research and providing patients with support services.
Please check back early Spring 2015 to find out more about our 5th annual John Pavlick Miles for Meso 8K race & Family Fun Run.
The Story Behind the John Pavlick Miles for Meso Race
Every morning, Ogla & John Pavlick would start their day by walking around Burke Lake in Burke, Virginia. It was their special time together.
In July 2008, John was diagnosed with both peritoneal and pleural mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. He died less than six months later.
Afterward, Olga told her daughter-in-law Sarah, “I’d really like to do a walk” at the lake. Sarah turned to the Internet and a few Google searches later she found Miles for Meso. As she read the web site, she remembered thinking, “this is exactly what we wanted to do.” She filled out the contact form and Theresa soon responded.
"I was just so excited to find somebody who was willing to help,” Sarah said.
