Miles for Meso races raise more than $55,000 for Meso Research

Three Miles for Meso races, presented by the Simmons Law Firm, raised more than $55,000 for mesothelioma research over the weekend in Illinois, Virginia and New York. The money, a combination of registration fees, sponsorships and T-shirt sales, will benefit the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, a national non-profit dedicated to funding peer-reviewed research and patient support services for peopled diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Participants of the upcoming Alton Miles for Meso 5K race could win a chance to run the race with Nike Pro Runner Stephen Pifer, who will compete in the upcoming 2012 Olympic Trials. A silent auction for the "Run with a Pro" prize package will be set up in the registration tent prior to Saturday's race.

Recommended guidelines for elite registration are that a runner should be able to complete the course with a time of around 15 minutes for men and around 17:30 for women. South Florida Race Raises $33,000 for Mesothelioma Research

The check has been signed and sent. We are excited to announce that the 2011 South Florida Miles for Meso race raised a grand total of $33,000 for mesothelioma research.

The money, a combination of registration fees, sponsorships, private donations and T-shirt sales, was donated to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.

South Florida Race Kicks Off Miles for Meso in 2011

Boca Raton, Fla. – Larry Davis will kick off the 2011 Miles for Meso program Sunday in sunny South Florida as he and the Boca Raton Road Runners club present the 2^nd Annual South Florida Miles for Meso 8K Run and 4K Tribute Walk.

The race takes place Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton, Fla. Preregistration begins at 5:45 a.m. and both races start at 7:30 a.m.

Davis, 65, of Pompano Beach, Fla., was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure, about four years ago. His dedication to running and fitness has helped him become a survivor.

Alton Miles for Meso Raises $25K for a Cure

We’re excited to announce that the Second Annual Miles for Meso has raised $25,000 for mesothelioma research. The money will go to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation where Director Kathy Weidemer said it will be used to supplement their award program for doctors conducting peer-reviewed research and to help support the foundation’s patient resources offered through its website.

A huge thank you goes to all of our sponsors, running clubs and the volunteers who helped make, not only the Alton race, but all three races a success. We’re still waiting on final numbers, for a total fundraising figure, but check back soon to find out.

We’re wrapping up the final details today as Miles for Meso prepares for a big weekend. About 1,000 people will participate or volunteer in one of three races happening in Indiana, Virginia and Illinois this weekend in observance of Mesothelioma Awareness Day.

Mesothelioma survivor shares her story with St. Louis' Channel 5

Meso survivor Julie Gundlach plans to run in tomorrow’s Alton Miles for Meso race. Her decision doesn’t even compare to all the other challenges this 39-year-old mother has faced during her battle with mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Julie shared her inspiring story with KSDK Channel 5’s news anchor Kay Quinn last night. And the news station generously included information about Saturday’s race.

Stubbornness wins the race

Being stubborn is nothing new to St. Louis native Julie Gundlach.
In 2006, Gundlach was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. This Saturday, she will run in the Miles for Meso 5K race in downtown Alton, Illinois.

This week, Julie will share her inspiring story with several media outlets here in the St. Louis area, including TV, radio and print publications, to preview the race. When one reporter asked her how she is able to run in the race, she told him, “sheer stubbornness, I guess … You kind of feel like you’re fighting for your life at this point.”

The Alton Miles for Meso 5K Race & Fun Walk is only a month away and already we have dozens of people signing up to help us celebrate Mesothelioma Awareness Day and spread the word about mesothelioma and how it’s a fatal, man-made epidemic that shouldn’t exist.
