WA Memorial Miles for Mes Race Raises More Than $13,000 for Mesothelioma Research

Posted on Tue Jul 17, 2012 7:58am

The Washington Memorial Miles for Meso 5K Run/Walk, presented by the Simmons Law Firm, has raised $13,500 for mesothelioma earlier this month. The money, a combination of registration fees, sponsorships and private donations, will benefit the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, a national non-profit dedicated to funding peer-reviewed research and providing patient support services for people diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The race took place in Federal Way, Washington at the city’s community center on July 4. The city’s mayor started the race. Mason Fletcher, of Puyallup, Wash., finished first place in men’s with a time of 17:09.2. Ashley Mason, age 15, finished first in women’s division with a time of 21:14.3. Medals were given to the top three finishers in each age bracket.

After the race, a pancake breakfast was cooked by volunteers with Federal Way Community Center and raised an extra $500.

“The city wants to do our Miles for Meso race every year,” said Race Co-Organizer Diana Stewart. “It was just huge for them and garnered a lot of community support with it being so professional.”

She extended to her thanks to everyone who helped make the race such a success.

“We are just so thankful to everyone who helped us make this an amazing event,” she said. “Our goal was $10,000. We’ve gone over our goal and are still receiving additional donations. We just feel so pleased that we were able to raise money for the Meso Foundation.”

Donations are still being accepted through the WA Memorial Miles for Meso fundraising page on the Meso Foundation’s website.
