Washington Miles for Meso Raises $13,000 for Mesothelioma Research

Posted on Thu Jul 18, 2013 1:50pm

The second annual WA Memorial Miles for Meso 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by the Simmons Law Firm, has raised over $13,000 for mesothelioma research.

Pat Dyhrman, Diana Stewart and Pat Hatley organized the event in honor of their husbands, who died from mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Over the past two years, the Federal Way Miles for Meso has raised a total of $28,000. The proceeds will benefit the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.

The race was in memory of Dick Dyhrman, a Weyerhaeuser Company Geologist, Bud Hatley, Federal Way School District Athletic Director, and Bob Stewart, Federal Way High School Teacher and Coach.

Approximately 300 runners and walkers participated in the event, which took place at the Federal Way Community Center. Prior to the start of the race, a local Boy Scout troop, of which Dick Dyhman was affiliated, raised the flag. Skip Priest, Federal Way’s mayor was in attendance to welcome the participants.

Stewart said the race is a tribute to all Washington residents who have suffered as a result of mesothelioma.

“The race was a tribute to all Washington residents who have suffered from this disease,” said Diana Stewart. “Thanks to everyone who participated in the race. Every dime earned from the race goes to the Foundation. It is a worthwhile cause and we are so thankful for the support,” Stewart posted on her Facebook page.

A pancake breakfast was provided for race attendees and volunteers after the race. Mason Fletcher was the overall winner for the second year in a row, with a time of 17:18, and the top female finisher was Mollee Huisinga, with a time of 20:21.
