Miles for Meso is an initiative of the SHC Foundation's Meso Committee, which works to provide funding for mesothelioma research and awareness. Miles for Meso races are held throughout the country to build awareness about mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos, and to raise money for mesothelioma research and awareness.
The Alton Miles for Meso race is an in-person and virtual event which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023.
Each race director sets the registration prices for their race. The cost ranges from $20-$45 depending on the race, location, and if its early or late registration. All registration costs includes a Miles for Meso T-shirt.
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer that attacks the smooth lining of the lungs and abdomen. This skin layer is made up of mesothelial cells. Mesothelioma is a solid tumor that forms as a result of microscopic asbestos particles.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day is a movement at both the state and federal level to declare September 26th a day for recognizing mesothelioma. Thanks to the hard work of grassroots advocates, Illinois passed a permanent resolution on May 30, 2009, declaring September 26th as Mesothelioma Awareness Day. In 2010, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution designating the day as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day.
The majority of the funds raised have gone to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Click to learn more about the Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to finding a cure. No! Everyone should participate! The 5K race is a timed, competitive event, and the 5K run/walk will be fun for all runners, walkers, families and others. It's a fun opportunity to show support for a great cause!
